There is a good reason that we can’t let our hens free range full time during the peak Summer growing months–they are incredibly efficient at tilling, churning, and scratching up every bit of dirt in their path! This time of year, however, we truly appreciate their natural tendencies as we open up the vacated garden beds and let them have at it! We keep piling in leaves as they fall, compost and other debris, and the chickens toss and till, searching for bugs, seeds and sprouts. We end up with no weeds, limited pests and amazingly happy and fertile dirt when it comes time for Spring planting. And, of course, the girls are quite happy too!
