The Communal Nest

DSCN8665

While our girls will lay in both nest boxes, they tend to prefer laying all the eggs in one, if it can be managed. This can make for a bit of congestion when multiple hens want to lay at the same time. The theory is that hens naturally lay eggs in a collection or “clutch” so that they will a. be safer in numbers and b. to make it easier to collect enough eggs on which to set. Of course, our eggs are unfertilized since we haven’t a rooster, but the gals don’t know that. They still like to deposit their eggs with all the others!
